General information for residence permit application

If the third country national would like to stay longer than 3 months in Hungary, he/she needs to ask for residence permit.

In order to apply for a residence permit, a prior appointment is required at the visa centers of VFS Global.

The appointment is booked via https://visa.vfsglobal.com/chn/en/hun/attend-centre.

Please note that when submitting the application the applicant is required to appear before the authority in person. If the applicant is a minor of limited capacity or if incompetent, the application may be submitted by the applicant’s legal representative in his/her stead. If the minor client has reached the age of six at the time the application is submitted, he/she shall be required to appear in person when the application is submitted. The responsibility for ascertaining the minor’s physical presence before the immigration authority lies with the legal representative.

When the application is submitted, the applicant’s facial likeness, signature and – over the age of six years – fingerprint will be taken for the residence permit issued with biometric data. The third-country national affected is obliged to abide by, and perforce tolerate, that procedure.

The decision about the residence permit application will be made by the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing, our Consulate General has no influence on the decision.

If the decision of the National Directorate-General for Aliens Policing is in favour of the application for residence permit, the entry visa for receiving a residence permit shall be issued by our Consular and Visa Section.

A D visa valid for three months (90-92 days) after a positive decision entitles its holder to a single entry and a maximum stay of 30 days, so we recommend that

  • taking into account the fastest review time of at least 10-15 days, start the procedure a maximum of 70 days before the planned departure date,
  • thus, the positive decision can be made about 60 days before departure at the latest, so you will have the remaining 30-32 days of validity for the maximum length of stay and administration,
  • after entering Hungary, we recommend that you appear as soon as possible at the regional directorate responsible for your accommodation in order to receive a residence card containing biometric identification data and to register your accommodation in Hungary.
